Two Ways to Drive a Screen. One Partner to Support Either
How It Works
Every digital signage screen needs something to drive it. The two main approaches — System on Chip (SoC) and external media players — each have their place, and the right choice depends on your environment, content complexity and operational requirements.
SoC displays have processing built directly into the screen itself. They’re a tidy option for simpler deployments where minimising hardware footprint matters. The trade-off is processing power and flexibility — SoC displays are well-suited to standard content but can struggle with complex, data-driven or multi-zone layouts at scale.
External media players connect to any compatible display and offer significantly more processing power, better performance headroom and greater control over the hardware lifecycle. For enterprise networks — where content complexity, uptime and long-term manageability matter — external players are typically the stronger choice. They also allow you to upgrade or replace the player independently of the screen, which reduces total cost of ownership over time.
Engagis supports both approaches. Our preference for enterprise-scale deployments is external media players, and we supply Chrome OS and Windows-based options to suit different environments and IT requirements. Whichever path you take, we select, stage, deploy and support the hardware as part of your end-to-end solution.

Built for enterprise digital signage networks.
Our Engagis-branded players — the EMP4C N100, EMP4C N150, EMPI3 N300, EMP5C N300 and EMP5C N150 — are individually certified for ChromeOS Flex. We also supply and support a broad selection of Windows Enterprise compliant media players to suit different performance requirements and deployment environments. All players work seamlessly with Impress Plus, and our operations are ISO 27001 certified across the business. Whatever you choose, our team manages the hardware from selection through to ongoing support.
SoC vs External Media Player Comparison Table
Choosing the right hardware to power your digital signage is critical to performance, scalability and long-term cost. Below is a side-by-side comparison of System on Chip (SoC) displays and external media players to help you quickly understand which option best suits your needs.
System on Chip (SoC)
Hardware footprint Minimal processing built into screen
Processing power Limited suited to standard content
Multi-zone layouts Limited support
Content complexity Simple loops and standard media
Hardware lifecycle Tied to screen replacement cycle
Enterprise manageability Varies by manufacturer and model
Engagis recommendation Suitable for simpler, lower-complexity deployments and restricted framework of content.
External Media Player
Hardware footprint Small external device alongside screen
Processing power Significantly higher performance. Handles complex, data-driven content
Multi-zone layouts Full support
Content complexity Rich media, dynamic data, interactive content
Hardware lifecycle Player can be upgraded independently of screen
Enterprise manageability Consistent content performance, centralised management
Engagis recommendation Preferred for enterprise networks at scale
Three Approaches. One Partner
We support every way of driving your screens — from integrated SoC displays to Chrome OS and Windows-based external players.
Our Certified Media Players
Engagis designs and certifies its own media players for digital signage deployments which are built to run Impress Plus and managed by our team from first install through ongoing support. Whether you’re running a straightforward content loop or a complex, multi-zone, data-driven network, we have a player to match. All options are staged, tested and deployed by our team.
